Abstract

The synopsis presents the most comprehensive data on the diversity, synonymy and distribution of species of the genus Saussurea DC. in Eurasia. The greatest species diversity of the genus occurs in the mountain systems of Central and South-East Asia, the Himalayas and Tibet. To date more than 1200 taxa of the species and subspecies level has been described. Every year 2-3 new species are described. The last revision of the genus was carried out by S.Yu. Lipschitz 40 years ago. Now the number of species in the genus has increased to almost 500 species; new data on phylogeny, karyology, distribution have been received. New genera Himalaiella Raab-Straube and Shangwua Yu J.Wang, Raab-straube, Susanna & J.Quan Liu have been distinguished. In Eurasia Saussurea is represented by 481 species belonging to 4 subgenera (Amphilaena (Stschegl.) Lipsch., Eriocoryne (Wall. Ex DC) Hook. F., Saussurea, Theodorea (Cass.) Lipsch.) and 15 sections.

Keywords: Amphilaena; distribution; Eriocoryne; Saussurea; subgenus; Theodorea
